The European Union will provide 50 million euros (about $52 million) in additional humanitarian aid to Gaza, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels after the first day of the EU leaders’ summit, Ursula von der Leyen said the first 56 tonnes of EU aid had already been delivered to Gaza via two flights to Egypt.

Meeting on Thursday, European leaders expressed concern over the worsening situation in Gaza and called for aid to reach those in need through “humanitarian corridors”.

Von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel both stressed the bloc’s commitment to tackling the humanitarian crisis.

The EU is in contact “with the leaders of the region to encourage solutions on the humanitarian front and the release of the hostages,” Michel said.
Asked whether representatives of Hamas would participate in an upcoming conference aimed at resolving the conflict, Charles Michel said he “sees no role” for the group, labeling it a terrorist organization.
