At least 18 people have been killed and 13 others injured in a shooting in Lewiston, Maine.

The gunman opened fire at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston. It is a large residential and industrial area with two hospitals. It is essentially a working town, with an average household income of about $48,000. 16% of the population lives in poverty, according to the US Census, as reported by CNN.

The authorities continue the manhunt to locate the perpetrator, 40-year-old Robert Card, against whom an arrest warrant has been issued for eight murders. He should be considered armed and dangerous, according to police.

According to information cited by CNN, an FBI team investigated the suspect’s last known address.

The 40-year-old is a certified firearms instructor and member of the US Army Reserves.

Army armored vehicles are involved in the search, along with nearly the entire force of the Maine State Police. The FBI has also dispatched dozens of agents and experts to the area to assist local and state police leading the investigation.

According to the police, the 40-year-old killer had psychological problems. He had stated that “he heard voices” while he had been hospitalized a few months ago in psychiatric clinic for two weeks.

Officials also said that Card had recently threatened to attack a National Guard base in Saco, Maine.

Police urge residents to report any suspicious activity to authorities.

The American president Joe Biden spoke by phone with Maine lawmakers and “offered full federal support in the wake of this horrific attack,” the White House said in a statement.

Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline is “devastated for our city and our people,” he said.
