Russia’s defense ministry said Thursday it had intercepted nine Ukrainian drones flying in the direction of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, which was seized by Russian troops at the start of the war and has been repeatedly bombed.

“Nine Ukrainian Copter-type drones were detected and intercepted by air defense elements on duty near the city of Erginkondar,” near which the plant, the largest of its kind in all of Europe, is located, according to a ministry statement.

Moscow has accused Kiev of continuing “provocations” and “threatening” to cause a “man-made disaster” at the Zaporizhia nuclear plant, as well as wanting to “impede the turnover of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)” inspectors whose are on site.

The two warring parties have repeatedly accused each other of bombing the facility and of wanting to cause a nuclear accident.

In late October, Moscow accused Kiev of targeting a nuclear power plant in Russia’s border region of Kursk with drones, hitting an administrative building and a nuclear waste storage facility.

The management of the factory, however, assured that the attack did not cause an increase in radioactivity.

The IAEA has repeatedly pointed out that the world has only been spared a nuclear accident in Zaporizhia by chance.
