Fears of flooding in areas of Britain where the ground has absorbed very large amounts of water from the heavy rain brought by Storm Ciaran on Wednesday and Thursday, the authorities say.
As of Friday morning, 90 flood warnings were in effect. These concern both southern England, which was the focus of the bad weather until yesterday, but also Scotland and northern England where the Storm is headed.
In eastern Scotland the danger arises as the ground is already saturated from the rains of Storm Babette about two weeks ago.
As well as the rain, Storm Ciaran brought strong winds to southern England on Wednesday and Thursday. They reached speeds of up to 167 kilometers per hour, with authorities saying hurricane-force winds were recorded on the island of Jersey in the Channel Sea.
Trees uprooted, roofs ripped off and objects blown away by the wind made up the scene in several mainly coastal areas of southern England, while a total of around 150,000 homes were temporarily left without power. Electricity restoration works continue for approximately 11,500 homes.
In Jersey, schools and the airport remain closed. There were also three injuries on the island on Wednesday.
