Downing Street’s policy-maker, Munira Mirza, submitted her resignation to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, accusing him of “inappropriately” verbally attacking the Labor leader’s main opposition.
In her resignation letter, which was revealed by Spectator magazine, Ms Mirza said it was the Prime Minister’s mistake to suggest from the House of Commons on Monday that Sir Kir Starmer, as former Attorney General, was personally responsible for not prosecuting the presenter. of BBC Jimmy Saville, who after his death in 2011 was revealed as one of the most hated pedophiles in Britain, with a horrific act of decades.
The accusation began to circulate from far-right figures on the internet, despite the fact that an investigation has shown that Mr. Starmer did not take any responsibility for the case.
“There was no legitimate or reasonable basis for such a claim. It was not an ordinary strong political argument. It was an inappropriate and partisan reference to a horrible case of pedophilia. “You tried to clarify your position today, but despite my urgings, you did not apologize for the misleading impression you made,” Ms Mirza said in a letter to Boris Johnson.
After three days in which Mr Johnson himself, his spokesman and ministers insisted that there was nothing to apologize for, the Prime Minister partially withdrew on Thursday, saying he was referring to the Attorney General’s overall responsibility. at that time Sir Kir Starmer and not at his own personal risk in the Saville affair.
Ms Mirza’s resignation has been hailed by political writers in Britain as a “huge blow” to Mr Johnson, as she has been his most trusted adviser for 14 years since becoming mayor of London. In fact, former Downing Street chief executive Dominique Cummings commented that it looks like the beginning of the end for the British Prime Minister.
The resignation comes after the announcement by a number of Conservative MPs of their move to submit a letter of no confidence in his person to the competent party body.
54 letters are needed to vote on a possible removal of the Prime Minister. Various counts place the number of letters believed to have been filed between 11 and 17.
