Two women have been charged with terrorism in Britain for displaying Hamas symbols at a demonstration in London, police said today, raising concerns about “radicalisation” as a result of Israel’s war on Gaza.
Following Hamas’s attack on Israeli soil last month and Israel’s retaliation in the Palestinian enclave, tensions are running high in Britain and elsewhere.
In London and other cities, the tens of thousands of demonstrators who took part in pro-Palestinian demonstrations are demanding that the British government call for a ceasefire.
The defendants took part in a demonstration on October 14 and allegedly wore stickers with images of people paragliding – a veiled reference to Hamas. They were charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act and will appear in court on November 10.
Some of the Hamas fighters used paragliders to launch their attack on Israel. Hamas is a designated terrorist organization in Britain and prosecutors said the images “raise suspicion” that the two women support the group.
Dominic Murphy, the Metropolitan Police’s head of counter-terrorism, expressed concern that “some people are using a legitimate protest demonstration as a cover to carry out criminal or even terrorist acts”. He also noted that events in the Middle East “may act as a radicalization factor.”
