Three days after the Rafah border crossing was opened, Brazilians waiting to leave were not included in the list approved by Israel despite diplomatic efforts to do so.
Brazil’s ruling Workers’ Party (PT) on Friday criticized the Israeli government for not allowing 34 Brazilians to leave the Gaza Strip, arguing that Israel selectively decides who to allow to leave the besieged Palestinian enclave.
Three days after the border crossing at Rafah, on the border with Egypt, was opened to allow nationals of other countries to leave the Gaza Strip, Brazilians waiting to leave were not included on the list approved by Israel despite diplomatic efforts to do so the direction.
“For the third time, the Israeli government has denied the departure of Brazilian citizens who are at risk of the massacre of civilians in the Gaza Strip,” underlined the president of the Brazilian Workers’ Party, Glazey Hoffman, in a post on social networks. Denouncing this “discrimination”, he pointed out that the Israeli government has given no explanation whatsoever for the decision. Brazil sought a negotiated resolution to the conflict when it chaired the UN Security Council in October, Hoffmann recalled. “Unfortunately, the Israeli government shows that it follows a political hierarchy when it comes to the departure of civilians, favoring some countries over others,” he claimed.
Brazilian media points out that Israel was disturbed by comments from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who while condemning the “terrorist” attack by Hamas, but also criticized the “insanity of Israeli Prime Minister” Benjamin Netanyahu, “who wants to erase the Gaza Strip from the map.”
Since Wednesday, hundreds of foreign passport holders and seriously injured Palestinians have left the Gaza Strip for Egypt, thanks to an agreement reached – brokered by Qatar – between Egypt, Israel and Hamas.
The Israeli government has vowed to wipe out Hamas after militants from the Palestinian Islamist group invaded southern Israel on October 7, killing about 1,400 people and kidnapping more than 240 others and taking them to the Gaza Strip. Israel’s military retaliation has claimed the lives of more than 9,250 Palestinians, according to the health ministry of the Hamas-controlled Palestinian enclave.
