Famous actress Charlize Theron has revealed that she is still dealing with the psychological trauma from the night her mother, Gerda Maritz, shot and killed her father.

More specifically, in an interview with Town & Country magazine, the “Monster” actress shared how this specific moment pushed her to commit to fighting violence against women.

“I would say this: It’s a simple correlation that has to be made. But I think it’s a lot more complicated than just having one night of trauma in your life.”

The 48-year-old from South Africa added: “With or without it, gender-based violence is so evident in South Africa and globally. It’s hard not to be aware of these things just because you’re a woman.”

In June 1991, the father of the “Mad Max: Fury Road” star, Charles, drunkenly threatened the then 15-year-old and her mother.

“My father was so drunk he staggered into the house with a gun,” he told NPR in December 2019.

“My mom and I were in my bedroom leaning against the door because she was trying to push the door open.”

Theron continued:

“So we were both leaning against the door from the inside so he couldn’t get through. He stepped back and simply shot through the door three times. None of the bullets ever hit us, which is just a miracle.”
