Among the items up for auction are her engagement ring, a ruby and diamond flower brooch and a pair of gemstone and diamond earrings
Paintings, jewelry, haute couture, furniture, decorative items and personal effects of the late Barbara Walters, one of the most prominent women in American television, are being sold at auction by Bonhams.
Featured artworks include 19th and 20th century masterpieces such as John Whorf’s ‘Swan Boat’, ‘Boston Public Gardens’ and her favorite creation ‘Flower Girls’ (Peonies) as she revealed in the painter’s autobiography Child Hasham.
The Barbara Walters: American Icon auction organized by Bonhams, together with the journalist’s daughter, Jacqueline Danforth, offers jewelry from her impressive collection, the Harry Winston engagement ring (est. $600,000 to $900,000) with an emerald diamond 13 .84 carats in platinum, given to her by producer Merv Adelson, whom she married not once but twice: from 1981 to 1984 and from 1986 to 1992, a ruby and diamond flower brooch (estimated at $12,000 up to $18,000) and a pair of bespoke gemstone and diamond earrings by Paris-based designer Joel Arthur Rosenthal, known as JAR.
Walters’ interviewees and colleagues were not just business associates, but often her friends, and she enjoyed hosting dinner parties for them at her home. Some of her guests were dr. Henry and Nancy Kissinger, Oscar and Annette de la Renta, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Condoleezza Rice, Colin and Alma Powell and Hugh Jackman. The cupboards were filled with everything necessary to host a good party, from Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Acorn Pattern flatware to an English Silver Repousse Five Piece Tea and Coffee Service, the auction house said. Furnishings include creations by Mario Buatta, as well as a bookcase with a Rococo Chinoiserie desk, where Walters used to write letters to friends and family.
Barbara Walters was the first to anchor an evening television newscast and secured historic interviews with international leaders and celebrities for US television during her career from 1951 to 2015 when she retired from television. He won 12 Emmy Awards, 11 of them while working for ABC News. She died in 2022 at the age of 93.
The auction runs from October 29th to November 7th online and in person at Bonhams in New York on November 6th.
Proceeds will go to humanitarian organizations that Barbara Walters supported.
