Hamburg airport remains closed due to a hostage situation on the airport runway after a child was abducted by his father as part of a domestic dispute, according to local authorities.

According to Bild newspaper, the man has asked to be allowed to travel to Turkey with his four-year-old daughter.

“Negotiations are continuing,” police wrote on X earlier today about 15 hours after the 35-year-old gunman drove his car through the bar at the airport gate and entered the runway, firing twice into the air and hurling two flaming bottles, which appeared to be with Molotov cocktails, according to a police spokesman.

His four-year-old daughter was also in the car.

The man parked it next to a Turkish Airlines plane.

“We have mobilized police psychologists and are now talking to the perpetrator, we hope for a negotiated solution,” police spokeswoman Sandra Løvgrun told NDR television. She called it a “very good sign” that the father of the family remains in contact with the authorities “for such a long time”.

“We’re still talking and talking and talking” with the father with the “hope to come to a peaceful solution.”

Police said they believed the incident was related to a “child custody dispute” and said negotiations were being conducted in Turkish.

Earlier, the car driver’s wife had informed the police about the child’s abduction, a police spokesman said.
