Five people have been killed and six injured after a car plowed into patrons sitting at tables in the forecourt of a pub in a popular rural and tourist town in Australia.

The 66-year-old driver of an SUV suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital after the crash at the packed beer garden. He was also in severe shock, Victoria Police Chief Superintendent Shane Patton said.

The driver of the vehicle hit the curb and then crashed into pub tables on the side of the road. After an investigation by the authorities, it was found that the 66-year-old driver tested negative for alcohol, while blood tests were also carried out to check if there were other harmful substances in his blood, Patton said.

A boy, two men in their 30s and a woman in her 40s died instantly, police said, while a teenage girl was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital where she died on Sunday night.

Two boys, ages 11 months and about 6 years, were also taken to hospitals and are in stable condition. Three adults remained in a Melbourne hospital on Monday, including a 35-year-old woman who was in intensive care.
