“I’m sure the judge will convict me because he always convicts me. This is a very unfair trial,” the former US president said
THE Donald Trump admitted today that his company, the Trump Organizationdid not provide accurate valuations of many of the properties she owns, in his lengthy, aggressive testimony at his New York fraud trial.
The former US president said the company undervalued his property in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, as well as the Doral golf course while overvaluing Trump Tower in New York, including. But he tried to play down the significance of those estimates, which New York State prosecutors say were made deliberately to get better loan terms and premiums.
“It wasn’t important. You made it important, but it wasn’t,” Trump said in reference to those estimates.
THE Judge Arthur Engoron has already ruled that these estimates were fraudulent. State prosecutors they argue that the estimates misled lenders and insurers, netting the company $100 million and inflating his wealth by $2 billion.
Trump has repeatedly called the case a “witch hunt” and accuses Attorney General Leticia James of being politically motivated against him. He repeated those accusations from the witness stand, saying that judicial authorities had unjustifiably turned against his businesses after he won the 2016 presidential election.
“I’m sure the judge will convict me because he always convicts me,” he said, adding a little later: “This is a very unfair trial.”
THE Engoron she reprimanded him severely, threatening to interrupt his testimony. “Mr Keys, can you check on your client? This is not a political rally. This is a court of law,” he said to Trump’s lawyer.
Attorney General James rejected Trump’s attacks on her. “In the end, all that matters are facts and figures. The numbers, my friends, don’t lie,” he commented outside court, before the former president’s testimony began.
Trump faces no jail time if convicted, but could face a hefty $250 million fine and ban him and his two eldest sons from doing business in New York.
