More than 100,000 residents in Memphis alone reported vacations by Thursday afternoon.
According to state figures, more than 146,000 residents were left in the dark.
Due to the slippery roads, 16 cars collided in Memphis, sending six people to hospital.
Authorities are urging citizens to avoid certain areas, to stay at home, and to call for help in neighboring states.
In fact, according to the weather forecast, the situation is expected to become even more difficult in the coming hours.
Hours before the bad weather hit, the chairman of the Texas Public Services Commission expressed confidence that the state network was “strong and reliable” and that it would endure. Which, however, is not confirmed.
