The United States on Thursday approved the sale of armored tanks for $2.53 billion to Romania, a NATO ally and neighbor of war-torn Ukraine, a Pentagon official said.

The deal “will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally,” the Defense and Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees foreign arms sales, said in a press release.

The deal “will improve Romania’s ability to deal with current and future threats by providing a credible force capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations,” it added.

Romania borders Ukraine, which has been at war with Moscow since February 2022 after Russia invaded its territory. Since then, the United States has stepped up its aid and arms programs to Kiev and its NATO allies.

The US State Department approved the sale to Romania and, as required by law, DSCA formally notified Congress on Thursday. Congress is now expected to ratify the sale agreement.
