Twenty hospitals in Gaza are now completely out of order
The largest hospital in the Gaza Strip and another one with children on mechanical support are being bombed todaythe World Health Organization reported.
Twenty hospitals in Gaza are now completely out of order.
In response to a question about the Gaza health ministry’s claim that Israel hit the courtyard of Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza CityWHO spokesperson Margaret Harris said: “I don’t have the details about Al Shifa, but we know how [οι άνθρωποι εκεί] are bombarded”.
He said how “significant shelling” also occurs at Radisi Hospital, the only hospital providing pediatric services in northern Gaza.
Asked to say more, he said that there is “intense violence” in Sifa, citing field colleagues. He didn’t place the blame somewhere.
Palestinian Health Minister Mai Alkaila said that an adult was killed and a child injured in Sifa, one of several medical facilities affected.
“Israel… targeted a number of hospitals in the Gaza Strip at dawn”she said in her statement.
Families have taken refuge in the hospital, the largest in the region, located inside Gaza City which has been surrounded by Israeli troops. Israel says militants are headquartered in the area and has told residents to leave and head south.
Children with mechanical support are hospitalized at the Radissi hospital and children on dialysis, Harris added, saying it would be impossible to remove them safely.
At the same press conference, UN humanitarian affairs spokesman Jens Lerke said there had been some “issues” with the flow of aid into Gaza through the Rafah crossing with Egypt, which was designed for pedestrians rather than trucks.
Only 65 trucks carrying foodmedicine, health supplies and water, and seven ambulances crossed the crossing from Egypt to Gaza yesterday, Wednesday, it said.
None of these aid shipments can reach northern Gazahe added.
“We can’t drive north at this point, which is of course very disappointing because we know there are hundreds of thousands of people who remain in the north”said the Lerke.
“If there is a hell on earth today, its name is northern Gaza”he said. “It’s a life of fear by day and darkness by night and what you can tell your children in such a situation is almost unthinkable — that the fire they see in the sky is there to kill them?” he said.
He called on Israel to reopen the Kerem Shalom crossing so that more aid could flow through.
Israel began four-hour pauses in fighting in the northern Gaza Strip so that Palestinians could escape the bulk of its retaliatory attacks on the enclave following the bloody incursion of Hamas militants into Israeli territory on October 7.
However, the Lerke criticized the pauses, saying they were not coordinated with the United Nations.
“Obviously, to do this safely for humanitarian purposes would have to be agreed upon by all parties.”he said.
He also expressed concern over overcrowding in Gaza shelters as tens of thousands of people flock south;
“It can only make the overcrowding situation in UNRWA facilities…worse”he said, referring to the UN agency for Palestine refugees which is setting up shelters for displaced Gazans.
