Two powerful explosions were heard this morning in the center of Kiev shortly before air raid sirens sounded in the Ukrainian capital, an AFP journalist found, while the mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko, announced that Kiev was under an air attack.

“Heavy explosions were heard on the left bank of the capital,” Klitschko wrote on the Telegram messaging app, referring to the left bank of the Dnieper River.

“Air defenses worked against ballistic weapons. The alert continues, stay in the shelters,” added the mayor.

This is the first attack against Kiev since the end of September, and so far there are no reports of casualties.

Just before the two explosions, AFP journalists saw two lines of white smoke in the sky, possibly left behind by two Ukrainian air defense missiles.

Air raid sirens then sounded in the capital.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country had developed new air defense systems supplied by its Western allies, anticipating a new wave of Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
