It is the first major mobilization of the Italian center-left since Giorgia Meloni was sworn in as the country’s prime minister. Later in the afternoon, the Democratic Party, Partito Democratico, called its members and supporters to the central People’s Square to say “no” to the policies of the government, which is made up of the League, Forza Italia and the Brothers of Italy Melon. “It is clear that this administration has failed, and we have a responsibility to create, as quickly as possible, a credible alternative,” said Democratic Party Secretary Ellie Sline.

The participants in today’s mobilization – more than 100,000 people are expected – will question the government’s immigration and refugee policy and, more specifically, the recent agreement of the Italian Prime Minister with her Albanian counterpart, Edi Rama, which concerns the creation of two closed centers for irregular migrants, in northern Albania. The Italian center-left considers it illegal and dangerous.

At the same time, the largest Italian opposition party says “no” to the constitutional reform presented by the government, which foresees the direct election of the prime minister and, at the same time, a weakening of the role of the president of the republic. “Enough with the discrimination against women, the LGBTI+ community, and immigrants. This government only knows how to favor the reduction of workers’ rights,” said Slaine to the newspaper La Repubblica. As for the crisis in the Middle East, he calls for the protection of the civilian population of Gaza and the release of the Israeli hostages. The analysts underline that the last, mass gathering of the “Democrats” was organized in the Italian capital, five years ago and that today’s initiative, according to the intentions of its organizers, should help the center-left to make a “new beginning” ».

It remains to be seen whether the Democratic Party will manage to find some basic common points with the rest of the opposition forces, starting with the Five Star Movement, in order to create, indeed, a broad front, which will be able to challenge the current government.
