The Canadian former fashion mogul Peter Nygaard was found guilty today offour counts of sexual assault, from a court in Toronto, as reported by Canadian television CBC News.

Nygard, 82, was on trial in Ontario Superior Court on five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible restraint.

The case involved offenses committed between 1980 and 2005. Jurors found him not guilty of a fifth count of sexual assault and a count of forcible restraint.

Nygard was arrested in late 2020 by Canadian police at the request of US prosecutors who accused him of using his businesses to lure women and young girls in the US, Canada and the Bahamas and force them to sexually satisfy him and his associates. About a year later he was prosecuted on the same grounds in Toronto.

Nygard’s sentence will be announced at a later date. His lawyer, Brian Greenspan, has not ruled out an appeal.

The US has sought his extradition from Canada, accusing him of human trafficking between 1990-2020.

Nygaard was born in Finland but grew up in Manitoba, Canada, where he founded his own fashion companies and eventually became one of the country’s richest people.

Prosecutors had said Nygaard met the women in social settings and invited them to the headquarters of his clothing empire in Toronto. All “tours” ended in his bedroom suite. The room had a bed, televisions and a jacuzzi. Prosecutors say the doors had no handles and the locks were controlled by Nygard.

Born in Finland, Nygard grew up in Manitoba, ran his eponymous clothing companies and became one of Canada’s richest men.
