In 2020, Norwegian architecture firm Helen & Hard completed two Woodnest treehouses, lodges anchored to pine trees on the steep hills of the town of Odda. This year, the architects added two more treehouses – nicknamed “Mountaintop Cabins” – and now there are four.
Like the previous ones, these tiny lodges hover six meters above the forest floor and each one is hooked to a pine tree with a steel hoop, bringing to mind tree-climbing adventures. Each cabin is just 14 square meters and has a carved wooden bathtub and a bed that descends from the ceiling at the push of a button.

Woodnest treehouses are aimed at lovers of the outdoors who reach it after a twenty-minute climb through the woods surrounding Odda. From this nest, guests can enjoy views through the neighboring trees looking out over the distant fjord and mountains beyond.

The whole project is an exploration of the possibilities of wood as a building material: each structure is made of a series of radial coated multi-layer wooden beams and its exterior is covered with untreated natural wood shingles that age with time, harmonizing with the natural environment

“The founders of Woodnest started with a desire to do something before they died· Kjartan & Sally met with a dream they both had in common, Sally wanted to sleep in a tree house and Kjartan wanted to build one” says the team describing Woodnest’s beginnings.
“The dream began and now it is a reality. This family business aims to bring you as close to nature as possible without renouncing luxury. Inspired by Scandinavian design, Woodnest boasts a collection of Norwegian design and locally crafted products.
With a small carbon footprint of just 14 square meters, these treehouses adapt perfectly to their natural environment,” add the architects.
