The British government is extending emergency aid to London transport

The managing body of public transport of London TfL, whose financial situation was marred by low attendance due to pandemicannounced today the extension of emergency assistance of British Government which allows it to maintain a high level of quality of its services.

The special government funding was due to expire today, but was extended until February 18, as Tfl “continues to talk to the government” about more long-term funding, the company said in a statement.

From the beginning of his crisis coronavirusthe government has already channeled almost ίνες 4 billion (,8 4.8 billion) in grants, to which 600 600 million in loans are added.

The Government and the City of London, on which the Public Transport for London (TfL) is affiliated, share responsibilities for finding sustainable funding.

The town hall is specifically asking for another 1, 1.7 billion from the government to fund the TfL by April 2023. Mayor Sadiq Khan warns of service cuts or even the closure of a metro line.

The Ministry of Transport, for its part, calls on the mayor to “take on the responsibility of restoring the TfL to a viable economic base instead of continuing to ask the state to rescue it.”

The economic recovery in London after the pandemic needs a “well-funded transport network in the capital,” the TfL said in a statement today. “It is essential that London receives long-term government funding, which is vital for the coming years,” he said.

After the last “alarm” for the Omicron variant, the passenger public returns to the public transport of London. The number of passengers, weekly, was in mid-January at 50% of the pre-pandemic level in the metro and 70% on buses.

TfL expects passenger traffic to increase by up to 80% this year, which, however, will leave a hole to be filled with revenue. The company is considering several options to boost its revenue: profitability gains, commercial real estate management or even consulting services.
