A 71-year-old hiker, missing since August, was found dead in the mountains of Colorado with his faithful dog by his side, who miraculously survived two months in the wild.

Rich Moore and his white Jack Russell, Finney, had set out on an Aug. 19 hike to Blackhead Peak, located in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The body of the missing man was found by a hunter on October 30.

The day after Moore’s body was found, members of the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue flew to the area to retrieve the victim from the scene. Moore’s loyal dog, who miraculously survived, was taken to a local vet and later reunited with his family.

Moore’s cause of death has not been released, but authorities said foul play is not suspected, according to The Denzer Gazette.

Once the news broke, many took to the internet to offer their condolences to the family and share what a special dog Finney was. “Surprisingly the dog stayed with him. It really is man’s best friend,” wrote one netizen, while another added: “Congratulations to the research team for their persistence.”
