Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former secretary general of NATO, recently presented a proposal on the basis of which Ukraine could join NATO, without the territories controlled by Russia.
According to the British Guardian newspaper, Rasmussen worked with Andriy Yermak, the adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before this year’s NATO summit in Vilnius, which however did not result in any “invitation” of the allies to Kiev. Rasmussen and Germak are now again discussing Ukraine’s place in the new European security architecture.
Rasmussen, who was NATO chief between 2009-14, insists Ukraine’s “partial” membership plan does not signal a “freeze” in hostilities but would serve as a warning to Russia that it cannot prevent Kiev from joining the alliance .
