Americans who plan to vote for Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 election say they are motivated more to prevent Donald Trump from returning to the Oval Office than to support the outgoing president, according to a new poll by Reuters and Ipsos.

The two-day poll, which ended Tuesday, shows Biden and Trump in a neck-and-neck battle: Republican Trump won 51 percent and Democrat Biden 49 percent when respondents were asked to choose between the two. The margin of statistical error amounts to 4%.

Biden voters were more likely than Trump supporters to choose him with the sole purpose of preventing the Republican tycoon from winning.

This is a sign of Biden’s low popularity and the deep antipathy Democrats feel for Trump.

Nearly half of Biden’s supporters said they would vote to express their opposition to Trump and his policies. Only 38% said they would vote for Biden because they support his policies. The rest (12%) were not sure which of the two reasons dictated their choice.

Among Trump supporters, 42% said they are voting for the Republican because they support his policies, and 40% to vote against Biden.

The rest (18%) were not sure why they chose Trump.

Democratic party analysts said the results of this poll reinforce the view that Biden should promote his re-election with positive interventions, especially in key swing states such as Georgia and North Carolina. Many Americans are unaware of the president’s economic policy and the new infrastructure investments approved by Congress.

“Biden will have to clearly present his economic vision,” said Michael Shirazo, who worked on Barack Obama’s 2008 and 2012 campaigns. “I don’t think you can win Georgia in this election with just one anti-trump message“, he added.

Jesse Ferguson, who worked for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, said Biden’s team should use the data to draw comparisons with Trump, rather than just attack him.

However, many Americans are tired of both Biden and Trump. A third independent candidate, anti-vaccine lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and son of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, is leading in the Reuters poll. In a hypothetical three-way contest, 32% of Americans would vote for Trump, 30% for Biden, and 20% for Kennedy. The rest said they don’t know yet or won’t vote.

The poll was conducted electronically, among a sample of 1,006 adults.
