Rosatom, the Russian atomic energy agency that owns Rosenergoatom, said similar models of turbines also exist at the nuclear plant located in the Varonia region.
Broken turbine blades under yet-to-be-explained circumstances caused a shutdown at a nuclear power plant unit in the Leningrad region on Sunday, Russia’s state-run nuclear power plant agency, Rosenergoatom, said. Nuclear reactors of the same type as those built by Russia in Turkey and also planned for Hungary have been installed at this particular station.
The priority according to the head of Rosenergoatom, Alexander Sutikov, is “to ascertain the causes of the destruction of the fins”, which he described as unprecedented. He estimated that the repairs will be completed by December 22.
The unit where the accident occurred was built in 2018 and houses the latest generation VVER 1200 advanced reactor. Similar ones have been procured by Belarus and are also being manufactured by Russia in Akuyu, Turkey and are being planned for the Paks-2 nuclear power plant in Hungary.
Sutikov said the broken blades were part of a 1.2MW steam turbine manufactured by Alexei Mordashov’s Power Machines company.
Rosatom, the Russian atomic energy agency that owns Rosenergoatom, said similar models of turbines also exist at the nuclear plant located in the Varonia region.
Since the turbines do not affect the operation of the nuclear reactor, Rosatom emphasizes that “their malfunction has no impact on nuclear safety” as the reactor mechanism is working as intended.
