A mother of two died tragically on Boquilla Beach in Cartagena, Colombia when she was struck by lightning. Tthe shocking moment was recorded by an eyewitness with his mobile phone.
According to the daily mail, Froilanis Maireth Rivas Román was walking on the beach and as can be seen in the footage, she was suddenly struck by lightning. The 34-year-old falls down after being electrocuted and died on the spot.
Next to her was a policeman who seems shocked by the sound of lightning but without having seen the woman.
Another falls to the sand in shock and then runs to help the woman but it was too late as she had already breathed her last.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), the odds of someone being struck by lightning are one in a million, yet nearly 90% of victims survive. In Colombia, lightning deaths due to weather conditions are many.
According to the Industrial University of Santander: “Colombia is the region with the most lightning activity in the world, which increases the number of deaths and injuries due to this phenomenon, especially in rural areas.”
