“I understand your anger but it is one thing to defend Israel and another to take care of people in need,” said the EU High Representative from Kibbutz Be’eri
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell today urged Israel not to be consumed by anger over its response to last month’s Hamas attack, saying “one horror does not justify another”.
Borel made the comments on a visit to Israel, speaking alongside Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen after their visit to Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the targets of the October 7 Hamas attack.
“I understand your anger but let me ask you not to be consumed with rage. I believe that this is something that can tell you best friends of Israel,” he said.
Speaking at a regional council building not far from the kibbutz, Borrell stressed that the EU’s solidarity with Israel and its support for the country’s right to self-defense are consistent with international law.
“But it is one thing to defend Israel and another to care for people in need“, he added.
“And that is why the European Union, along with supporting Israel’s right to self-defense, also calls humanitarian aid for food, water, fuel, protection (of people in Gauzesaid the European official, who also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of the hostages.
What sets us apart from terrorists is the respect for human life.
We call for unhindered humanitarian access and humanitarian pauses so that assistance can reach those in need.
All civilians deserve to be protected. Too many have been killed already.
