The prevention the biggest “disaster” for the British Royal Navy since World War II reveals the Sun newspaper, which describes how a nuclear-powered submarine began to sink without the crew initially noticing.
The 140-person old Vanguard-class submarine, which carries Trident 2 ballistic missiles that carry thermonuclear warheads, reportedly suffered damage to its main sounder while preparing to begin a patrol in the Atlantic Ocean.
The master thought by looking at the damaged indicators that the submarine was still level, when in fact it was diving deeper and deeper.
He had already approached the “danger zone” of depth when engineers at the stern of the vessel saw another sounder and realized what was happening.
If the dive had continued, it would have led to disaster for the crew and a “nightmare” operation to recover the submarine and the nuclear reactor that powers it, before the Russians could get there, the Sun notes.
The British newspaper is not naming the submarine and the depth it reached for security reasons.
The UK has four Vanguard class submarines with Trident 2 missiles, but currently only two are fully functional. At any given time since 1969, at least one of them has been on patrol so it can fire back at us with a nuclear strike.
