Battles to Defeat the “Zaytoun” Battalion
At the same time, soldiers of the 36th Division’s Combat Engineer, Infantry and Armored Corps are fighting to defeat the Hamas “Zaytoun” battalion. According to the IDF, the Zaitoun Battalion is one of the main Hamas battalions operating in the Zaitoun area of Gaza City.
“During the last days of the 36th Division’s fighting at Zaitoun, we constantly encountered an enemy hiding behind children, women and political infrastructure. The soldiers of the division, including soldiers from Golani Brigade, 188th Brigade and Bislamach Brigade, operating in a complex war zone in an urban area, located terrorists hiding in civilian areas and killed many of them. We will not stop until we achieve all our goals and will continue to act to protect our home.” stated the Commander of the 36th Division.
In the Indonesian hospital
Gunfire continued to be heard at the Indonesian hospital throughout the night, Dr Marwan al-Sultan, the hospital’s director, told the BBC that around 500 patients remained inside.
Although, as he said, there was information “that two buses will be sent to evacuate wounded people who needed surgery, bound for southern Gaza, in the end we are still waiting, no one knows what will happen”, he stressed.
The Palestinian Islamist movement continues to complain that the Israeli army is waging a “war on hospitals” in Gaza; almost all health facilities in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave have now been shut down. Israel, for its part, accuses Hamas of using hospitals for military purposes and the civilians in them as “human shields”, which the Palestinian Islamist movement categorically denies.
The head of Indonesian diplomacy Retno Marsudi yesterday condemned the “Israeli attack (…) which killed many civilians and is a clear violation of international humanitarian law”.
According to sources at the hospital, over a hundred wounded were treated in the evening and during the night from this health structure in the Nasser compound of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
“We got out (alive) by a miracle”, initially “a school was hit (where the evacuees had taken refuge)”, a young wounded man told AFP as he was being treated. “We were at the Zaitoun school in Gaza City, and from the school we went to the Indonesian hospital. I just have no words,” he added.
Israeli strike on Nuseirat refugee camp
Overnight, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that an Israeli strike hit the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central part of the Palestinian enclave, killing at least 17 Palestinians and injuring many more.
Israeli authorities have yet to comment.
