Defense Minister Krishna Mathura said on Tuesday that 14 bodies – four more than the previous count – had been taken to the mortuary in the capital Paramaribo.
Fourteen people lost their lives due to an accident that occurred yesterday Monday in an illegal gold mine about 100 kilometers south of the capital of Suriname, according to the latest account of the authorities of the South American country.
Defense Minister Krishna Mathura said on Tuesday that 14 bodies – four more than the previous count – had been taken to the mortuary in the capital Paramaribo. He added that two minors were rescued, one of whom is hospitalized.
A group of miners were working in a tunnel in the area of the mine operated by Rosebel Gold Mines, a subsidiary of China’s Zijin Mining, located in Brokopondo district, 120 kilometers south of the capital.
Rescue crews, assisted by teams from Guyana, continue to search for survivors.
According to the testimonies of residents, 20-30 miners were working in a tunnel they had dug themselves, looking for gold.
In a press release, Rosebel Gold Mines expressed its sadness over the accident, recalling that it had last month asked the authorities to evict the illegal miners from the site. “We have repeatedly emphasized the dangers of illegal gold mining,” the company said, arguing that many efforts had been made since the beginning of the year to take steps to stop this “dangerous situation.”
Similar accidents often occur in illegal mining. As in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana and Venezuela, many gold miners work illegally, in extremely dangerous conditions.
