Violent protests erupted in Dublin after five people, including children, were injured in a knife attack.

Crowds chanting anti-immigrant slogans clashed with police hours after a man stabbed two adults and three young children outside a school.

One of the children is hospitalized in critical condition.

Police arrested a man in his 50s who also had to be treated for injuries.

Sections of the crowd clashed with the police, resulting in several police officers being injured. Authorities suspended bus and tram services in parts of Dublin and called for calm.

Authorities have not officially released his identity, but people in the crowd that gathered at the scene of the attack near Parnell Square in Ireland’s northern capital said he was a foreigner.

The Irish Times reported that the main suspect in the attack has been arrested and is suffering from what are believed to be self-inflicted wounds. The newspaper said that initial indications suggested that the man tried to attack young people and that bystanders intervened.

Police said they are investigating and are not looking for another person at this time.

The motive for the attack, which took place near a school, has not been clarified, the Irish Times added.

According to public television network RTE, the police do not consider the incident to be of a terrorist nature.
