On 23 November, EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Ivansson and the Minister of Interior of the Republic of Turkey Mr. Ali Gerlikaya met in Brussels for the second Turkey-EU high-level dialogue on migration and security. Turkey is a candidate country for EU membership and an important partner of the EU in terms of migration and security.

They exchanged views on each side’s policies and actions related to the prevention of irregular migration and discussed common approaches to various issues, including border security and combating migrant smuggling. They also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the respective immigration and law enforcement agencies.

They reaffirmed their common desire to facilitate the fulfillment of the evaluation criteria in the context of the dialogue on the liberalization of the visa regime and to intensify the cooperation of the two sides for this purpose, while at the same time ways of facilitating travel for Turkish citizens will be explored through the acceleration of issuing visas.

In terms of security, they agreed to step up cooperation and mutual efforts to fight terrorism and organized crime, as well as strengthen law enforcement cooperation.

The parties agreed to meet regularly at the technical and senior level to review the progress of cooperation on their common interests in the areas of migration and security.
