The American ex-cop Derek Chauvinwho has been convicted of the African-American man’s murder George Floydwas attacked with a knife by a fellow inmate, resulting in injuries at the federal prison in Arizona, in the southwestern United States, where he is being held, according to the New York Times newspaper.

Derek Chauvin “was stabbed Friday at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, according to two people with knowledge of the case,” the newspaper reported.

US Federal Correctional Services confirmed to AFP that there had been “an attack”, but did not specify the name of the victim.

Prison staff “took measures to save the life of an inmate” and the “assistance” of medical services was requested, they added. The inmate was taken “to a local hospital to receive care and undergo tests,” they concluded.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin, then a member of the Minneapolis Police Department, arrested Floyd, pinned him face down on the ground and held his knee to his neck for nearly 10 minutes, despite pleas from the African-American man who said he couldn’t breathe. .

Two other officers helped Chauvin hold Floyd down.

The scene was filmed and posted on social media, sparking an outcry both in the US and beyond against racism and police brutality.

Chauvin was found guilty of manslaughter in 2021 and sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison. The US Supreme Court last week rejected his appeal against his conviction.

He pleaded guilty to “violating the civil rights” of Floyd in federal court in 2022 and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.
