The armed group said its release of a Russian citizen was taken in recognition of Moscow’s support in its conflict with Israel.
Hamas announced today that it has released a Russian hostage who was kidnapped in the October 7 attacks in Israel, “in response to the efforts” of Russian President Vladimir Putin and “his support for the Palestinian issue.”
The armed group said its release of a Russian citizen was taken as recognition of Moscow’s support in its conflict with Israel with Russia’s TASS news agency saying the hostage had already been handed over to the Red Cross.
“In response to the efforts of Russian President Putin and in assessing Russia’s position in support of the Palestinian cause. We released a prisoner who has Russian citizenship,” Hamas said.
Two groups of hostages, including foreigners, have already been freed and a third group is expected to be released later today, under a ceasefire deal between the Islamist movement and Israel that came into effect on Friday.
The Kremlin regularly calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, reiterating that lasting peace in the Middle East requires the creation of a Palestinian state.
