More than 89,000 families have been forced to flee their homes and have taken refuge in 112 camps, Raymond Omolo, a senior interior ministry official, said in a statement.
Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia have been hit for weeks by torrential rains linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon. The extremes follow the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 40 years.
Kenyan President William Ruto yesterday called a meeting of ministers and officials to manage the crisis and promised that the flood victims will receive aid worth millions of euros.
In a press release issued after the meeting by the Kenyan presidency, there was talk of 76 dead and over 35,000 families displaced.
The rainfall, which has already far exceeded normal for the season and is attributed to El Niño, “caused large-scale flooding which unfortunately resulted in the loss of human lives, the displacement of families, outbreaks of epidemics, damage to infrastructure and goods”, the Kenyan presidency emphasized in the announcement.
