With today’s announcement on the case of “alleged corruption within the European Parliament”, the so-called Qatargate, and on the occasion of the “numerous false statements” published in some media, the Brussels federal prosecutor’s office reminds that “justice must be able to she carries out her work calmly” and emphasizes that she will not proceed with the lifting of the immunity of any MEP at this time.

The announcement by the Brussels prosecutor’s office follows recent publications in the Belgian and Italian press describing the Belgian MEP, Marie Arena, as having close relations with the alleged “mastermind” of the case, Antonio Pantzeri, as well as with her former prosecutor case, Michel Clez, who never called her in for questioning. The announcement of the Brussels prosecutor’s office seems to want to give an answer to the indirect accusations of publications to the Belgian judiciary.

“As part of the numerous questions raised in recent days by the press, the federal prosecutor’s office recalls that the vast majority of acts of information or guidance do not require a request to waive parliamentary immunity in the case of a member of either the Belgian or the European Parliament,” emphasizes the Brussels prosecutor’s office and adds that there are no reasons for the intervention of the first president of the Court of Appeal. The prosecution’s statement continues as follows:

“Faced with numerous false statements recently published in some media and related to this case, the federal prosecutor’s office recalls that the Judiciary must be able to carry out its work calmly. There is no need at this stage of the investigation, which is supposed to be secret, to reveal the strategies of the investigation, even if the constant leaks we deplore once again lead to often dangerous interpretations. We remind you that multiple Authorities, at different levels, participate in the permanent internal control of the legal process. In the case of this particular case, the federal prosecutor’s office considers, given the importance of the investigative tools already at its disposal, that the lifting of parliamentary immunity is not justified at this time.”
