The head of the UN Antonio Guterres warned on Friday of the devastating consequences of climate change, saying “the fate of humanity hangs in the balance”.

Addressing the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, the UN Secretary-General noted that the conference should be a ray of hope in the fight against climate change.

“Make this COP a new hope for the future”, was Antonio Guterres’ appeal to world leaders attending the conference.

“You can prevent planetary failure. We need leadership, cooperation and political will. And we need it now,” Guterres said, adding that “climate justice” is already “long overdue.”

“The developing countries destroyed by disasters they did not cause’ he said no.

According to the UN, COP28 will highlight the need to “maintain a sustainable climate” while stressing that coal, oil and gas production “must be rapidly reduced”.

Another key objective is to increase the use of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal energy. The UN wants to triple in size the renewable energy capacity by 2030 reports Anadolu.

Financing and investment for adaptation and climate resilience “needs a quantum leap”, the UN emphasizes.
