The honorable first place was taken by Greece in today’s vote for the selection of the new composition of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in Category A.

With 146 votes out of a total of 166 countries, our country tied with Italy and Japan.

The Minister of Shipping, Christos Stylianidis, spoke of an “extremely significant success”, who in the previous days was at the Organization’s headquarters in London making successive contacts with officials of other countries promoting the Greek candidacy.

“It confirms in the most emphatic way the trust and credibility of Greece in the IMO and in international shipping,” the minister wrote to X.

The vote took place on Friday morning as part of the 33rd session of the IMO Assembly.

The Council, consisting of 40 countries divided into three categories, is the executive body of the Organization, responsible for supervising the work of the IMO. Elections are held every two years.

The candidate countries for the ten places in Category A were eleven. In the end, Russia was left out with 80 votes, after an election “campaign” with special balances due to the war in Ukraine.
