An attack on a gold mine of the Poderosa company in the La Libertad region of northwestern Peru was launched yesterday Saturday by armed men, as the Minister of the Interior Victor Torres Falcon announced, notifying that nine workers were killed and 15 others were injured.

The attackers opened fire on the workers and detonated explosive devices in the gold mine. A clash with the men of the security services followed, while four miners were held hostage.

The gold mine, located in the Patas region, was rushed by elite Peruvian police forces who managed to regain control of the facilities, arrest seven perpetrators and confiscate their weapons.

The Ministry of the Interior of Peru has announced the deployment of special forces in Patas that will accompany the local security services to combat the criminal gangs infesting the region.
