“We are constantly working to renew (the truce) and ease the burden of our people in the Gaza Stripbut ceasefires are not an alternative to a total ceasefire”Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani said in a speech at the Gulf Cooperation Council summit being held in Doha.
Qatar, home to several Hamas political leaders, is leading negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian militant group.
Those talks led to a ceasefire that eventually lasted seven days before hostilities resumed on Friday. During the truce, Hamas released dozens of hostages it was holding in Gaza in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisonersand Israel allowed humanitarian aid to pass through the enclave.
On Saturday, Israel ordered a negotiating team from Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency that was in Doha to return to Israel.
Sheikh Tamim called on the UN Security Council to force Israel back to the negotiating table regarding the war in Gazasaying the inaction of the international community to stop the conflict is “shameful”.
“It is shameful for the international community to allow this heinous crime to continue for almost two months, during which the systematic and deliberate killing of innocent civilians, especially women and children, continues.” he said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar stated that today’s summit in Doha aims to forge a united approach to end the war in Gaza among the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
“Now the ‘ceiling’ should be raised so that we can discuss a sustainable ceasefire that could lead to an end to this war,” Majed Al-Ansari, a spokesman for Qatar’s foreign ministry, told Al Jazeera.
Israel launches offensive to wipe out Hamas in retaliation for October 7 cross-border attack in which militants killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages, according to Israeli counts.
In eight weeks of war, Gaza’s health ministry reported that at least 15,899 Palestinians were killed, 70% of whom were women or under the age of 18.
