In a call with his Israeli counterpart, the British prime minister pointed to the deployment this week of the destroyer HMS Diamond, to boost deterrence in the region and keep the flow of goods unhindered.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his frustration at the collapse of the ceasefire in Gaza in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, his office said.
“The Prime Minister spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on (Tuesday) afternoon. He expressed his disappointment at the breakdown of the ceasefire in Gaza, which has allowed the release of hostages,” a Downing Street spokesman said.
“Leaders discussed urgent efforts to ensure all remaining hostages are safely released and to allow those British citizens in Gaza to leave.”
Sunak and Netanyahu both expressed concern over Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea. “The leaders expressed their shared concerns about increasing attacks by Iran-backed Houthi fighters against merchant ships in the Red Sea,” according to Downing Street.
“The Prime Minister emphasized the UK’s commitment to free navigation and pointed to the deployment this week of HMS Diamond, a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer, to strengthen deterrence in the region and keep goods flowing smoothly.”
Britain condemned attacks on merchant shipping in the Red Sea on Monday and said it was committed to guaranteeing safe shipping in the region.
