Escalation in South America, as the president of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro mobilizes the army, announcing the annexation of Essequibo, a territory belonging to Guyana.

Through a law announced Tuesday, Venezuela will create a new province or state in Essequibo, having already appointed a temporary authority: Lt. Gen. Alexis Rodriguez Cabello.

The president of Venezuela, three days after the referendum in his country where more than 95% of those who voted approved the annexation of the area, he explained that he would proceed with his planning.

In a televised appearance on Tuesday, Maduro unveiled a new official map of Venezuela with Essequibo embedded. Earlier, Maduro had sent military detachment in Puerto Barrimanear the borders of the claimed area.

Essequibo is an oil-rich region and, as reported by the BBC, Venezuela’s president has ordered the state oil company to issue mining permits in the region, while the new law will make the region a part of his country.
