A Ukrainian former parliamentarian whom Kiev considered a traitor was killed today near Moscow by Ukrainian secret services, a Ukrainian source said.
Ilya Kiva was a pro-Russian member of the Ukrainian parliament before Moscow invaded in February 2022, but was in Russia throughout the war and frequently criticized Ukrainian authorities online.
Russian investigators said Kiva died at the scene after being shot in a park in the Odintsovo district, southwest of Moscow, while the killer is being sought.
The Ukrainian source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the SBU security service was responsible for the killing.
Andrii Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s GUR, another intelligence agency, told Ukrainian television that Kiva was “finished,” but did not say who was behind his death.
Kiva was sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court to 14 years in prison on charges that included treason and incitement to violence.
Another pro-Russian former member of the Ukrainian parliament, Oleg Chariov, survived an assassination attempt in Crimea in October.
Several Russian war supporters have been killed since the start of the war in operations that Moscow attributes to Ukraine, including journalist Daria Dugina, war blogger Vladlen Tatarski and former submarine commander Stanislav Rzytski.
All of them were listed in Myrotvorets (Peacemaker), a huge unofficial Ukrainian database of people considered enemies of the country. Today Kiva’s photo on the site was tagged with the word “Cleared” in crimson letters.
