Seychelles President Wavell Ramkalawan declared a state of emergency today after an explosion at an ammunition depot and flooding caused by heavy rains in an industrial zone and surrounding areas.

“We ask everyone to stay home. All schools will remain closed. Only essential service workers and persons traveling are allowed to move freely,” according to a statement issued by Ramkalawan’s office.

The explosion caused “massive damage” to the Providence industrial zone and surrounding areas on Mahe, the main island of the Seychelles, the statement said, while flooding caused by rainfall had caused “great devastation”.

No further details are given in the announcement.

Seychelles is made up of 115 islands and is the country in Africa with the smallest population, about 100,000 inhabitants.
