The United Arab Emirates has called for a vote this morning (New York time) on a draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire, more than two months after the Israeli army’s war with the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, according to Reuters news agency diplomatic sources.

In order to adopt any draft decision, nine votes in favor are required and no veto is exercised by any of the five permanent member states of the SA that have the right of veto (USA, Russia, China, France, Britain).

The US, which has traditionally defended Israel in the UN, has expressed the view that no further action by the UN’s top body is required in the current phase of the conflict.

The new effort to press for a ceasefire follows a rare move by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to formally warn the UN of the threat to “international peace and security” posed by the war in the Gaza Strip , with the activation, for the first time during his term, of Article 99 of the Charter. His move provoked an extremely bitter Israeli reaction.
