Hamas said today that Israel bombed Gaza’s medieval Omar Mosque, the oldest and largest mosque in the Gaza Strip, causing widespread damage to the building, with the Palestinian movement calling it a “heinous, barbaric crime”.

Photos released by Hamas media in Gaza that Reuters could not immediately verify show extensive damage to the mosque, with collapsed walls and roofs and a huge crack at the bottom of the stone minaret.

Reuters reporters from Gaza identified the minaret in the photo as that of the Omari Mosque.

And the Al Jazeera news network has verified that the photos are of the mosque.

An Israeli military spokesman did not respond to a request for comment on the damage to the mosque.

The Omar Mosque is named after the second caliph of Islam, Omar.
