The current speaker of the Parliament and a high-ranking official of the co-ruling Albanian DUI party, Talat Xhaferi, will be the head of the caretaker government of North Macedonia to be appointed on January 28, 2024. The decision was made in the afternoon by the Central Committee of this party.

According to the electoral legislation of North Macedonia, 100 days before the parliamentary elections are held, a caretaker government is formed to lead the country until the parliamentary elections.

Parliamentary elections in North Macedonia will be held on 8 May 2024 and will coincide with the second round of presidential elections, which will only take place if none of the candidates for the presidential seat receives more than 50% in the first round to be held on April 24, 2024.

Based on a political agreement between the co-ruling parties “Social Democratic Union” led by the Prime Minister of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovacevski and the Albanian DUI led by Ali Ahmadi, this caretaker government will be headed by a person nominated by the Albanian party and for for the first time in the country’s history, since 1991 when it gained its independence, the country will have an Albanian prime minister, even for 100 days.
