American actor Ryan O’Neill, known for his roles in the film “Love Story“, as well as in “Barry Lyndon” by Stanley Kubrick, died yesterday, Friday, at the age of 82, his son announced.
“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to say, but it’s true. My father passed away peacefully today,” Patrick O’Neill explained via Instagram.
Ryan O’Neill rose to fame in 1970 thanks to “Love Story”, a romance in which he played a Harvard law student who falls in love with a girl who is forced to work in the library to pay for his studies. The role earned him an Oscar nomination.
He was then hired in 1975 by Stanley Lyndon for the film Barry Lyndon, a social satire on 18th century manners.
The actor was also known for his stormy relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett (“Charlie’s Angels”) that spanned decades. Farrah Fawcett died in 2009 from the effects of cancer, on the same day as Miles Jackson.
After the actress’ death, she was at the center of a row over a portrait of Farrah Fawcett signed by Andy Warhol, which was claimed by the University of Texas. After a legal battle, a California court recognized in 2013 that he was the owner.
The actor has previously had other issues with the justice system. In 2009, he was sentenced to 18 months in rehab after police arrested him and his son, Redmond, and found methamphetamine at their Malibu residence.
