Thailand’s first Olympic gold medalist has been accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl, the country’s authorities have announced, a charge he denies.
The 17-year-old filed a complaint late Sunday against Somluk Kamsing, who became a national hero when he won gold in boxing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
“He was accused of abusing the girl,” the police colonel told AFP.
Police confirmed local media reports that the 50-year-old Olympic champion met the teenager on Saturday night at a bar in Khon Kaen, a town in the northeast, where they stayed until 3:00am. local time before they went to a hotel where the girl said the former Olympian assaulted her.
The colonel said officers would question the teenager along with a child protection team to gather evidence.
Somluk told local media that she denies the strongman, saying he went with her to the hotel room but stopped when she told him she was only 17.
The age of sexual consent in Thailand is 18.
