THE Donald Trump maintains his dominant position in the internal Republican race for the nomination of the party’s candidate in the 2024 presidential election, as he is supported by more than 60% of the party’s voters, indicated an Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of the Reuters news agency as yesterday monday

The survey found that 61 percent of Republican voters say they plan to vote for the tycoon in the statewide primary ballots that will choose Democratic President Joe Biden’s opponent in the November 2024 election.

The former president’s lead is 50 points: both Florida Gov. Ron DeSandis and former South Carolina Gov. and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley are credited with 11% of the GOP’s stated vote intentions. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy does not exceed 5%, former governor of New Jersey Chris Christie 2%, while 8% of the sample declared undecided.

The first intra-party vote will be held in Iowa on January 15.

Republican supporters do not appear to be deterred by the series of state and federal legal challenges facing Mr. Trump. Besides, there are no signs of rallying in favor of any of the former president’s opponents.

Ms Haley has increased her share significantly since September, when an earlier Ipsos poll for Reuters suggested she was no more than 4% of voters. However, Mr. Trump’s gap with her and the rest of his rivals widened, as his own percentage then stood at 51%.

The poll was conducted online from December 5 to 11 among a sample of 1,689 people who declared themselves Republican supporters. The margin of statistical error is ±3 percentage points.
