Little Idris was wrapped in a white shroud and a light blue quilt, with his grandmother clutching him to her chest and crying non-stop as she knelt next to bodies lying on the floor of a hospital in Gaza.

Idris al-Dbari, who was born a month ago while war was raging around him, he lived in a tent in Rafain southern Gaza, with his family who had fled their home.

One-month-old Idris and his mother, Wafaa, were killed today in a nighttime Israeli airstrike.

After the attack, the bodies of at least ten adults and children had been placed on blankets spread on the floor of Abu Yosef al-Najjar hospital in Rafah, all wrapped in white shrouds with the names of the dead and dates of death written on them.

Among the devastated relatives who stood with bowed heads around the dead was Umm Zeyad al-Dbari, grandmother of Idris, who she carefully unrolled the top of the shroud to see his face and gently stroked his black hair.

“The baby was born at the beginning of the war, at the beginning, it was born a month or so ago,” she declared, her voice breaking with sobs and her despair evident on her face.

“My love,” he said, kissing Idris’s forehead, before repeating in a whisper, “my love.”

Idris’ body was laid upon his mother, on whose shroud were written the words “the witness Wafaa al-Dbari” and the date of her death – December 12, 2023. Umm Zeyad remained kneeling beside them, her hand resting on Idris.

The war was sparked by an invasion of southern Israel by Hamas gunmen on October 7, who killed 1,200 people including babies and children and took 240 people of all ages hostage, according to Israel.

Committed to eliminating Hamas, Israel has responded with a military offensive and a total siege of the densely populated enclave that have killed more than 18,000 people, most of them women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
